The Phonak Lumity L90 offers significant improvements over its predecessor, the Paradise. Key advancements include enhanced speech understanding, advanced noise reduction, and seamless Bluetooth connectivity. The Lumity's advanced features, such as Motion Sensors and health tracking, make it a compelling choice for active people.
While the Lumity offers superior performance, it's essential to consult with a hearing healthcare professional to determine if it's the right choice for your specific needs. They can assess your hearing loss, lifestyle, and budget to recommend the most suitable hearing aid solution.
Phonak Lumity hearing aids launched in August 2022, with Phonak Audeo Lumity L90 hearing aids being the premium technology specification in this platform, so you will benefit from all the features and personalisation that this hearing aid range has to offer.
This means that Lumity L90 will include Dynamic Noise Cancellation, improved listening in car, and an automatic focus switch from sound and speech. Plus, the L90 has 20 fine-tuning channels, 9 automatic programs, and a Speech Enhancer.
When the Phonak Lumity was launched it appeared that this product was almost identical to the Phonak Paradise. However, we did not give it enough credit, Phonak brought some significant improvements to the software and customers are reporting better results with the Lumity when compared to the previous generation, Paradise.
What features have improved and what's new? Let's look at the new features of Phonak Audeo Lumity L90 hearing aids and what has been improved upon since the Paradise hearing aid range of the same technology level (P90) below:
This is a new feature that encompasses several changes. Previously, when in background noise, the hearing aids would detect a speaker in an arc in front of you and automatically focus on that speaker to reduce the background noise you hear from other directions.
Now these hearing aids, using the improved SpeechSensor technology, can also detect a speaker from the side or back of you and also automatically focus on that speaker in the same way.
It is unclear why this is a benefit as you don't usually hold a conversation with someone facing away from them, however, Phonak has said that you are alerted to the fact that someone behind you is speaking so you can then turn to face them.
By reducing background noise the hearing aids make it less taxing to follow a conversation in noisy situations. A good thing surely, but then we see a little * referring us to the note buried at the bottom of Phonak's own Lumity range page stating: "compared to Phonak Marvel".
So, what they are saying is that these hearing aids are better than the ones two generations ago from 2018 but have no significant reduction in listening effort when compared to the Phonak Paradise.
Phonak maintains its image as the manufacturer that makes the most connected Bluetooth hearing aids currently on the market. Along with great zoom features for a more accurate sound in background noise, what are the other main features of the Phonak Audeo Lumity L90 hearing aids? How will they make a difference to your hearing?
By using its SmartSpeech technology, you can now benefit from both improved speech understanding and reduced listening effort - ideal for those challenging hearing environments. In fact, Phonak Audeo Lumity L90 hearing aids are said to offer 16% better speech understanding from in front of you, as well as around 15% better speech intelligibility from the back and both sides of you.
This hands-free hearing aid for both iPhone and Android phones also includes Motion Sensors and 360-degree listening for a full soundscape, improved clarity in background noise and focus on speech automation.
What does this mean for your hearing? This technology means you will be able to fully immerse yourself in conversations and enjoy better hearing in different listening situations. This could be in quiet or noisy environments like a library or a restaurant.
Phonak Audeo Lumity L90 hearing aids provide new dimensions with directional microphone technology, as well as improved speech detection and speech understanding - all powered by the SpeechSensor and the new StereoZoom 2.0.
What does this mean for your hearing? You will benefit from a gradual smooth adaptive focus when in conversation and 360-degree speech detection.
Using the myPhonak app you can tap into new health-tracking features. For example, tracking steps, activity, distance, and wearing time. You can also use the Remote Care app feature to gain a more bespoke listening experience and telehealth services.
Access universal connectivity with multiple Bluetooth devices with Phonak Audeo Lumity L90 hearing aids so you can connect to multiple Bluetooth-enabled favourites. You can also track your personal health data within the myPhonak app.
You might also find the Remote Virtual Appointment feature convenient for on-the-go adjustments with your audiologist via the Telehealthcare option.
These hearing aids are compatible with both iPhone and Android smartphones. For direct calls and streaming you'll need Bluetooth 4.2 as a minimum.
Phonak Audeo Lumity L90 hearing aids are designed to stay charged throughout the day, so it comes as no surprise when people opt for rechargeable models when looking for a hearing aid - plus they are better for the environment. The Phonak Charger Ease charges both the L-R and RT and Naida L-UP hearing aid models in just three hours.
Available in eight colours, these are Sand Beige, Beige, Sandalwood, Chestnut, Champagne, Silver Grey, Graphite Grey, and Velvet Black.
There are three BTE and power hearing aids catering to mild to moderately severe hearing loss levels which were launched in March 2024. Here is the breakdown for these models:
Phonak Naida L-SP: For mild to severe hearing loss, universal connectivity, and telecoil.
Phonak Naida L-PR: For mild to moderately severe hearing loss, universal connectivity, and rechargeable.
Phonak Naida L-UP: For severe to profound hearing loss, universal connectivity, and telecoil.
These digital hearing aids are the same price as the Paradise if you are looking to buy Phonak then it makes sense to buy the Lumity. This hearing aid is ideal for patients who want to understand speech better in challenging environments or keep up with strenuous activities, such as sports.
The Phonak Audeo Lumity L90 hearing aids are suitable for mild to severe hearing loss levels and can be fitted with either a dome, canal mould, or other types of earmoulds. With Bluetooth streaming, powerful sound processing, and remote care - we think if you can afford this premium device, you won't be disappointed.

If you have significant hearing loss in both ears, you should be wearing two hearing aids. Here are the audiological reasons why:
Localisation: The brain decodes information from both ears and compares and contrasts them. By analysing the minuscule time delays as well as the difference in the loudness of each sound reaching the ears, the person is able to accurately locate a sound source. Simply put, if you have better hearing on one side than the other, you can't accurately tell what direction sounds are coming from.
Less amplification is required: A phenomenon known as “binaural summation” means that the hearing aids can be set at a lower and more natural volume setting than if you wore only one hearing aid.
Head shadow effect: High frequencies, the part of your hearing that gives clarity and meaning to speech sounds, cannot bend around your head. Only low frequencies can. Therefore if someone is talking on your unaided side you are likely to hear that they are speaking, but be unable to tell what they have said.
Noise reduction: The brain has its own built-in noise reduction which is only really effective when it is receiving information from both ears. If only one ear is aided, even with the best hearing aid in the world, it will be difficult for you to hear in background noise as your brain is trying to retain all of the sounds (including background noise) rather than filtering it out.
Sound quality: We are designed to hear in stereo. Only hearing from one side sounds a lot less natural to us.

For most people, the main benefit of a rechargeable hearing aid is simple convenience. We are used to plugging in our phones and other devices overnight for them to charge up. Here are some other pros and cons:
For anybody with poor dexterity or issues with their fingers, having a rechargeable aid makes a huge difference as normal hearing aid batteries are quite small and some people find them fiddly to change.
One downside is that if you forget to charge your hearing aid, then it is a problem that can't be instantly fixed. For most a 30-minute charge will get you at least two or three hours of hearing, but if you are the type of person who is likely to forget to plug them in regularly then you're probably better off with standard batteries.
Rechargeable aids are also a little bit bigger and are only available in Behind the Ear models.
Finally, just like with a mobile phone, the amount of charge you get on day one is not going to be the same as you get a few years down the line. Be sure to ask what the policy is with the manufacturer warranty when it comes to replacing the battery.

For most people, the answer is yes. But it's never that simple.
The majority of hearing problems affect the high frequencies a lot more than the low ones. Therefore open fitting hearing aids sound a lot more natural and ones that block your ears up can make your own voice sound like you are talking with your head in a bucket. Therefore in-ear aids tend to be less natural.
However the true answer is we can't tell until we have had a look in your ears to assess the size of your ear canal, and until we have tested your hearing to see which frequencies are being affected.
People with wider ear canals tend to have more flexibility, also there are open fitting modular CIC hearing aids now that do not block your ears.
There is also the age old rule to consider, that a hearing aid will not help you if it's sat in the drawer gathering dust. If the only hearing aid you would be happy wearing is one that people can't see, then that's what you should get.
Most people can adapt to any type of hearing aid, as long as they know what to expect. Have an honest conversation with your audiologist as to what your needs are.
Generally speaking, six or more. Unless it's none at all.
The number of channels a hearing aid has is often a simplistic way an audiologist will use to explain why one hearing aid is better than another, but channels are complex and it is really not that straightforward. Here are some reasons why:
Hearing aids amplify sounds of different frequencies by different amounts. Most people have lost more high frequencies than low and therefore need more amplification in the high frequencies. The range of sounds you hear are split into frequency bands or channels and the hearing aids are set to provide the right amount of hearing at each frequency level.
Less than six channels and this cannot be done with much accuracy, so six is the magic number. However, a six channel aid is typically very basic with few other features and is suitable only for hearing a single speaker in a quiet room. The number of channels is not what you should be looking at, it's more the rest of the technology that comes with them.
As a final note, different manufacturers have different approaches. One method is not necessarily better than any other. For example, some manufacturers have as many as 64 channels in their top aids. Most tend to have between 17 and 20. One manufacturer has no channels at all.
Hearing aids are easily lost, misplaced or damaged and typically are one of the most expensive personal possessions an individual can own. We offer hearing aid warranty coverage for £80 per year per aid. Find out more about this service we provide here
