Signia Xperience Hearing Aids - The reality of hearing loss
Launching in September 2019 - The Signia Xperience models will be known as the "X" range, the Signia 7X, 5X, 3X, 2X and 1X superseding the previous Nx generation. What is the reality of hearing loss?It all goes fine until the person you're sat next to you tries to talk to you. You just can't make out what they are saying, as they are not the focus of your hearing aids.
You could turn your head and stare directly at them, making them the focus of your hearing aids, however, we just don't tend to do that as it would seem a bit odd and might get us dis-invited from future social occasions. I exaggerate of course, but you want to be able to act naturally and enjoy the meal, rather than having to second guess what your hearing aids are doing all of the time.

It turns out that 3D acoustic motion sensors are the answer
With the Signia Xperience digital hearing aid, if you acted naturally and inclined your head slightly toward the person at your side when they spoke to you, the motion sensors in the hearing aids would be tracking this movement and would intuit that your hearing intention was to hear the person in the direction you have inclined your head and it would immediately shift the focus of your hearing towards them to facilitate this.
Research with a pinch of salt
As always, the efficacy of this system is backed up with data from research done both in the lab and in real world situations. The results were encouraging showing comparisons between how the aids performed with the sensors turned on when compared to having them turned off. In background noise situations where the person wearing the aids is moving, hearing understanding in noise and overall satisfaction were both improved.
However, this only compares their own technology, essentially the Xperience Pure compared to their previous range, the Nx Pure. What is doesn't do is show comparisons to technology by other manufacturers.
Early impressions are that it is going in the right direction. By increasing environmental awareness and avoiding the narrow focusing of hearing in noise is a very similar approach to the OpenSound system used by Oticon, and that is a system that is generally considered the best in the world for hearing in background noise at present.
