Overview | Key benefits of Starkey Edge AI | Top 3 benefits of Starkey Edge AI | Is Edge AI worth it? | Conclusion
When we begin to compare hearing aids from the same brand, we first look at the new launch and see what's changed, what's stayed the same, and ultimately whether they would make a difference to your hearing enough to invest, and if it's worth considering the upgrade.
The Starkey updates on offer here make it particularly appealing for active individuals seeking a more adaptive and future-proof hearing solution. However, if you live a quieter lifestyle, you may not need all these advanced features, and simpler alternatives may suffice.
In this article, we briefly take a look at the main differences between Starkey Edge AI and Genesis AI hearing aids, along with the features and benefits, we hope it will give you more of an insight into the two ranges and whether the latest launch is the right choice for you.
Starkey Edge AI, overall, combines great listening performance with health tracking features, making them ideal for those with an active lifestyle, who like keeping tabs on their health and looking for a hearing solution that can keep up.
There are a handful of clear improvements brought with the Edge, such as the way it handles sound and enhances speech driven by AI machine learning.
Looking at the key benefits of this range versus the ones found in Genesis AI, there aren't any huge steps to boast about. However, subtle advancements will certainly make a difference, especially for those new to Starkey devices who haven't experienced such technology.
The G2 Neuro Processor, for example, is faster and more precise, giving a better understanding in speech amongst the noise and crisp sound quality liken to "natural" hearing. The deep neural network (DNN) is also impressive, a personalisation powered by AI, that customises how you hear sound by creating profiles in sync with your needs.
Although the motion sensor technology has remained, so you can continue to feel more confident and safe as well as driving the health monitoring features, the battery life is longer - powering your performance all day.
Using Bluetooth LE Audio for quality sound without interruptions, the connectivity appears to be more seamless too. Starkey Edge AI is also Auracast-ready, making these hearing aids future-proof in terms of connectivity. Although it won't mean much to you now, it will do when this new standard of Bluetooth rolls out in the next few years.
1. The processing power (G2 Neuro Processor) delivers 100x more DNN (deep neural network) processing. Genesis AI doesn't have this enhancement, making the AI elements of adaptation slower.
2. There is a 30% improvement in speech recognition in challenging environments with Edge AI. Genesis AI is still dependable in this area but less accurate in such listening scenarios.
3. In regards to connectivity, Edge AI has LE Audio which is simply better quality along with lower latency.
The best way to answer this is by relating to common real-life listening scenarios. For example, if you're at a vibrant dinner party, Edge AI will automatically adapt your hearing support to fit your new environment. Giving you better clarity in conversation helping you to feel a part of the space you're in, and being more present and engaged with friends and family.
You're at work and by using Edge AI's advanced connectivity, you can join digital meetings and calls without worrying about the reliability of the connectivity as well as missing words or not understanding the context within speech.
Finally, you're partaking in sport at the weekend and due to the motion sensor technology, you can benefit from better spatial awareness and safety as well as staying engaged in the sport itself and the team camaraderie.
Whilst other brands out there have their strengths, Phonak's universal Bluetooth and Widex's natural sound to name a few, Edge AI arguably raises the bar in terms of AI-powered adaptability and health data tracking.
Ultimately, Edge AI is considered more than just a hearing aid by many loyal fans. It provides a lifestyle choice with its feature-rich healthable solution. In reality, you might not need all the features offered here, you might live a modest lifestyle and spend most of your time in quiet surroundings or having coffee with a friend.
Your expectations wouldn't be as high, your hearing aids wouldn't need to work as hard and the AI-driven adaptability wouldn't be as important. If this is the case, you might want to look at alternatives.
On the other hand, if you are relatively tech-savvy, value advanced features, enjoy keeping in control of your health and wellbeing, and due to your active nature - you would prioritise precision in speech clarity amongst the noise - Edge AI should be on your list.
You might be a loyal Starkey fan and want to upgrade to their new technology, looking on behalf of a loved one, or you might be completely new to hearing aids - whatever the reason for considering Starkey Edge AI - you need to speak to an audiologist first.
They will provide professional support and look at your expectations, needs, loss, and lifestyle to help you decide whether Edge AI is the right fit for you.
Hearing aid technology advances constantly and it's important to know when it's time to replace the ones you already have. For example, you might find that your current hearing aids aren't supporting your hearing like they used to.
This might be because your hearing loss has changed and you now need more features and programs that aren't accessible to you.
Our audiologists can help you understand your new hearing loss needs and specifications and the hearing solutions that can get your hearing back on track.

If you have significant hearing loss in both ears, you should be wearing two hearing aids. Here are the audiological reasons why:
Localisation: The brain decodes information from both ears and compares and contrasts them. By analysing the minuscule time delays as well as the difference in the loudness of each sound reaching the ears, the person is able to accurately locate a sound source. Simply put, if you have better hearing on one side than the other, you can't accurately tell what direction sounds are coming from.
Less amplification is required: A phenomenon known as “binaural summation” means that the hearing aids can be set at a lower and more natural volume setting than if you wore only one hearing aid.
Head shadow effect: High frequencies, the part of your hearing that gives clarity and meaning to speech sounds, cannot bend around your head. Only low frequencies can. Therefore if someone is talking on your unaided side you are likely to hear that they are speaking, but be unable to tell what they have said.
Noise reduction: The brain has its own built-in noise reduction which is only really effective when it is receiving information from both ears. If only one ear is aided, even with the best hearing aid in the world, it will be difficult for you to hear in background noise as your brain is trying to retain all of the sounds (including background noise) rather than filtering it out.
Sound quality: We are designed to hear in stereo. Only hearing from one side sounds a lot less natural to us.

For most people, the main benefit of a rechargeable hearing aid is simple convenience. We are used to plugging in our phones and other devices overnight for them to charge up. Here are some other pros and cons:
For anybody with poor dexterity or issues with their fingers, having a rechargeable aid makes a huge difference as normal hearing aid batteries are quite small and some people find them fiddly to change.
One downside is that if you forget to charge your hearing aid, then it is a problem that can't be instantly fixed. For most a 30-minute charge will get you at least two or three hours of hearing, but if you are the type of person who is likely to forget to plug them in regularly then you're probably better off with standard batteries.
Rechargeable aids are also a little bit bigger and are only available in Behind the Ear models.
Finally, just like with a mobile phone, the amount of charge you get on day one is not going to be the same as you get a few years down the line. Be sure to ask what the policy is with the manufacturer warranty when it comes to replacing the battery.

For most people, the answer is yes. But it's never that simple.
The majority of hearing problems affect the high frequencies a lot more than the low ones. Therefore open fitting hearing aids sound a lot more natural and ones that block your ears up can make your own voice sound like you are talking with your head in a bucket. Therefore in-ear aids tend to be less natural.
However the true answer is we can't tell until we have had a look in your ears to assess the size of your ear canal, and until we have tested your hearing to see which frequencies are being affected.
People with wider ear canals tend to have more flexibility, also there are open fitting modular CIC hearing aids now that do not block your ears.
There is also the age old rule to consider, that a hearing aid will not help you if it's sat in the drawer gathering dust. If the only hearing aid you would be happy wearing is one that people can't see, then that's what you should get.
Most people can adapt to any type of hearing aid, as long as they know what to expect. Have an honest conversation with your audiologist as to what your needs are.
Generally speaking, six or more. Unless it's none at all.
The number of channels a hearing aid has is often a simplistic way an audiologist will use to explain why one hearing aid is better than another, but channels are complex and it is really not that straightforward. Here are some reasons why:
Hearing aids amplify sounds of different frequencies by different amounts. Most people have lost more high frequencies than low and therefore need more amplification in the high frequencies. The range of sounds you hear are split into frequency bands or channels and the hearing aids are set to provide the right amount of hearing at each frequency level.
Less than six channels and this cannot be done with much accuracy, so six is the magic number. However, a six channel aid is typically very basic with few other features and is suitable only for hearing a single speaker in a quiet room. The number of channels is not what you should be looking at, it's more the rest of the technology that comes with them.
As a final note, different manufacturers have different approaches. One method is not necessarily better than any other. For example, some manufacturers have as many as 64 channels in their top aids. Most tend to have between 17 and 20. One manufacturer has no channels at all.
Hearing aids are easily lost, misplaced or damaged and typically are one of the most expensive personal possessions an individual can own. We offer hearing aid warranty coverage for £80 per year per aid. Find out more about this service we provide here
