Why is comparing important? | New chip | New Autosense | What does Infinio do better? | Any negatives to Infinio? | Should I invest in Infinio?
What are the differences between Phonak Audeo Lumity and Phonak Audeo Infinio? When we compare different models within the same brand, we look at what has changed, what has stayed the same and what are the benefits of upgrading to the latest range.
We hope this article's details will help determine if investing in Infinio is the right solution or upgrade for your needs.
The Infinio platform offers a significant advancement in AI and deep neural network (DNN) capabilities within hearing aids. At the core of the Phonak Sphere Infinio is the DEEPSONIC, or Deep Sound Optimised Neural Integrated Chip, which is a novel addition to the Phonak family.
While Phonak Lumity introduced AI for enhanced speech recognition in challenging environments, Phonak has indicated that Infinio has the potential to truly transform the sound landscape.
The DEEPSONIC chip boasts an impressive 53 times the processing power, leveraging 22 million sound samples to train its DNN algorithms and performing 7,700 operations per second. What does this mean for wearers? According to Phonak, the Spheric Speech Clarity feature significantly enhances the ability to hear and comprehend conversations.
The technology also provides easier listening in noisy settings, demonstrating great efficiency with statistics such as a 34% reduction in listening effort when hearing speech from a distance. Plus, a 45% reduction in effort for speech coming from an adjacent room.
Phonak Infinio includes AutoSense 6.0, an upgraded version of AutoSense 5.0, found in Lumity. This intelligent system acts as the operating framework for hearing aids, automatically detecting the sound environment and adjusting settings accordingly to optimise and enhance hearing experiences.
However, it’s essential to note that, like other hearing aids, the effectiveness of the Phonak Audeo Infinio in enhancing speech perception is ultimately influenced by how they fit in your ears. When fitted with open domes, which are typically recommended for those with mild to moderate hearing loss, background noise can still infiltrate.
This is why your audiologist is an important part of achieving the right balance between comfort, sound quality, and the capabilities of the Phonak Infinio for improved speech understanding amid background noise. Fitted right, you can depend more on your hearing rather than relying heavily on lip reading and the context of a conversation.
Phonak has chosen to maintain its Classic Bluetooth with the latest Phonak Infinio platform, similar to its previous models. Reports indicate that the Phonak Audeo Infinio hearing aids are equipped with Bluetooth 5.3, offering more stable connectivity and an extended range compared to the Phonak Lumity, which uses Bluetooth 4.2.
This Classic Bluetooth approach enhances compatibility with Android smartphones. Like the Phonak Audeo Lumity, the Audeo Infinio can pair with up to eight devices and connect to two simultaneously, allowing wearers to switch between them as needed.
This functionality is particularly useful for those working from home, as it enables seamless connectivity between their hearing aids and devices like laptops for applications such as Zoom during virtual meetings.
Infinio is also Auracast-ready, although it’s important to mention that, although it is integrated into Infinio, it has not been activated yet. Chances are this will be a free firmware update in the future.
Looking at the Phonak Audeo Infinio Sphere in particular, it stands out as being one of the potential top hearing aids to launch in 2024. Its ability to enhance speech comprehension in challenging noise environments is commendable; however, there are a couple of areas that might present a barrier to some.
Size: The device is relatively large, which might put off some wearers, particularly those seeking more discreet options or those with smaller ear shapes. There are smaller receiver-in-canal (RIC) hearing aids available, like the Widex models, but it all depends on what's important to you. Is it technology or discretion?
However, opting for other small offerings might mean sacrificing key features, which might be deemed important to you, such as Bluetooth connectivity, rechargeable batteries, and enhanced clarity and noise reduction capabilities.
Battery life: Using the Sphere Speech in Noise program for optimal noise management and clarity can significantly impact battery performance, reducing the runtime of a fully charged unit from 16 hours down to just 7 hours. This is shorter than some other premium models out there.
In reality, if your hearing aids are functioning in their AutoSense mode and you maintain a balanced lifestyle, you should find that the battery lasts all day. However, using the AI-driven "spherical speech in noise" mode continuously can significantly reduce battery life, potentially cutting it in half.
If you're considering an upgrade to your hearing aids, the Phonak Audeo Infinio is certainly a strong contender among the premium options on the market. If budget permits, we recommend opting for the Phonak Audeo Sphere Infinio over the standard Audeo Infinio due to its enhanced processing power. It will significantly improve your speech clarity.
Regardless of the situation, it’s important to consider what your current hearing aids do well, where they might fall short, and if your hearing needs or typical listening environments have changed. Are you engaging more socially or spending time in noisy places where better hearing is essential?
Consult your local audiologist to discuss these details and determine if Phonak Infinio (either standard or Sphere) is the right solution or upgrade for your hearing loss needs. Compare Lumity and Infinio's features and watch the Infinio hearing aid video below.
Are there the best hearing aids for me? Overall, the Infinio is positioned as a strong upgrade for those needing better speech comprehension and connectivity, but is this hearing aid right for you and your hearing loss needs?

If you have significant hearing loss in both ears, you should be wearing two hearing aids. Here are the audiological reasons why:
Localisation: The brain decodes information from both ears and compares and contrasts them. By analysing the minuscule time delays as well as the difference in the loudness of each sound reaching the ears, the person is able to accurately locate a sound source. Simply put, if you have better hearing on one side than the other, you can't accurately tell what direction sounds are coming from.
Less amplification is required: A phenomenon known as “binaural summation” means that the hearing aids can be set at a lower and more natural volume setting than if you wore only one hearing aid.
Head shadow effect: High frequencies, the part of your hearing that gives clarity and meaning to speech sounds, cannot bend around your head. Only low frequencies can. Therefore if someone is talking on your unaided side you are likely to hear that they are speaking, but be unable to tell what they have said.
Noise reduction: The brain has its own built-in noise reduction which is only really effective when it is receiving information from both ears. If only one ear is aided, even with the best hearing aid in the world, it will be difficult for you to hear in background noise as your brain is trying to retain all of the sounds (including background noise) rather than filtering it out.
Sound quality: We are designed to hear in stereo. Only hearing from one side sounds a lot less natural to us.

For most people, the main benefit of a rechargeable hearing aid is simple convenience. We are used to plugging in our phones and other devices overnight for them to charge up. Here are some other pros and cons:
For anybody with poor dexterity or issues with their fingers, having a rechargeable aid makes a huge difference as normal hearing aid batteries are quite small and some people find them fiddly to change.
One downside is that if you forget to charge your hearing aid, then it is a problem that can't be instantly fixed. For most a 30-minute charge will get you at least two or three hours of hearing, but if you are the type of person who is likely to forget to plug them in regularly then you're probably better off with standard batteries.
Rechargeable aids are also a little bit bigger and are only available in Behind the Ear models.
Finally, just like with a mobile phone, the amount of charge you get on day one is not going to be the same as you get a few years down the line. Be sure to ask what the policy is with the manufacturer warranty when it comes to replacing the battery.

For most people, the answer is yes. But it's never that simple.
The majority of hearing problems affect the high frequencies a lot more than the low ones. Therefore open fitting hearing aids sound a lot more natural and ones that block your ears up can make your own voice sound like you are talking with your head in a bucket. Therefore in-ear aids tend to be less natural.
However the true answer is we can't tell until we have had a look in your ears to assess the size of your ear canal, and until we have tested your hearing to see which frequencies are being affected.
People with wider ear canals tend to have more flexibility, also there are open fitting modular CIC hearing aids now that do not block your ears.
There is also the age old rule to consider, that a hearing aid will not help you if it's sat in the drawer gathering dust. If the only hearing aid you would be happy wearing is one that people can't see, then that's what you should get.
Most people can adapt to any type of hearing aid, as long as they know what to expect. Have an honest conversation with your audiologist as to what your needs are.
Generally speaking, six or more. Unless it's none at all.
The number of channels a hearing aid has is often a simplistic way an audiologist will use to explain why one hearing aid is better than another, but channels are complex and it is really not that straightforward. Here are some reasons why:
Hearing aids amplify sounds of different frequencies by different amounts. Most people have lost more high frequencies than low and therefore need more amplification in the high frequencies. The range of sounds you hear are split into frequency bands or channels and the hearing aids are set to provide the right amount of hearing at each frequency level.
Less than six channels and this cannot be done with much accuracy, so six is the magic number. However, a six channel aid is typically very basic with few other features and is suitable only for hearing a single speaker in a quiet room. The number of channels is not what you should be looking at, it's more the rest of the technology that comes with them.
As a final note, different manufacturers have different approaches. One method is not necessarily better than any other. For example, some manufacturers have as many as 64 channels in their top aids. Most tend to have between 17 and 20. One manufacturer has no channels at all.
